Blue dotted teardrop: The Taw near Chapelton, Devon
The River Taw is large and fairly wide here, and although the current is quite fast it’s only around 1m deep.

Green teardrop: West Lydford, Somerset
A picturesque stretch of river that’s deep enough to bomb into from the nearby bridge. It’s also got a rope swing and some impressive church-side scenery.

Turquoise teardrop: Port Meadow, Oxford
England’s largest and oldest meadow is accompanied by more than 2km of river with little beaches. You’ll need to watch out for boats.

Orange teardrop: Backney Common, Herefordshire
This public meadow has a small sandy beach so you can even bring your bucket and spade. The Wye is fairly deep here so don’t throw the kids in.

Pink teardrop: Outney Common, Suffolk
A 3km stretch of the River Waveney, meandering around open common land. Up to 2m deep in places, and popular with canoeists.

Purple teardrop: Elan Wye, Powys

Where the River Elan meets the Wye, there’s a mixture of sections deep enough to dive into and shallower places to paddle upstream.

Yellow teardrop: Hell Gill, Cumbria
A deep gorge with impressive rock sculptures, a shallow stream, small waterfalls and a midway plunge pool. It’s best to have a wetsuit.

Blue teardrop: Chesters, Northumberland
Near Hadrian’s Wall, you’ll find some shallow rapids close to the ruins of a collapsed Roman bridge.
